The Staffsystem

at the International Guide and Scout Camp Bucher Berg

General

The responsible team on the site is formed by fifteen to twenty voluntary mbers of Staff from different countries all over the world. Eight to ten of them are in attendance at the camp every day. The leaders in charge, and head of staff are the Camp Director and the Manager of Activities.

Aims of the Staff system

Scouts and Guides from all acknowledged Scout Associations are part of the Staff. The possibilities created by the " European Scout Voluntary Program" are tried to be integrated. This Staff groups aim is to practice itself as well as to instruct the methods of Scouting to the participating groups throughout the camp. This includes the responsible performance of jobs occupied, living together in the group, but also the involvement with new inputs and chances. Another intention is the ability to bring own skills, knowledge and personality onto the sight. Parts of the own culture, that foreign staff members contribute are for example activities for the participants related to their background. E.g. Drawing Japanese writing (Tadashi, Japan) specific technique of colouring Easter eggs (Kati, Hungary) and so on.

Intercultural learning is hereby implemented. When possible, this additional knowledge is also placed in the Camp Activities. Social competence is supposed to be learned and practiced in living together with the International guests and Staff members. This is a must. For example allowing the internationals to take part in conversations, by translating or take care of different cultural or religious traditions. Although this quite a lot which is offered by the Camp, certain standards are necessary already before the Camp, or have to be internalised on a "training for jobs". It is the aim to use, widen and strengthen the Staff members' knowledge. The importance of separating litter, for example, has to be explained to foreign members. Furthermore all the existing Activities organised in Workshops, have to be explained to and have to be internalised by the Staff members. Through internalising these things, a broad view is created. All these points lead to the matter, that the International Guide and Scout Camp Bucher Berg is also recognised as a place where for certain qualifications internships are arranged.

Applying for the Staff

Scouts and Guides from all over the world apply to work in the Staff six months before the season. The members are selected by the Head of the Board, the Camp director and the Camp management. The applicants have to demonstrate a good knowledge of English, have to be prepared to stay alt least 2 weeks on the Camp. They have to be ready to take part in the preparation weekend. This can sometimes be a problem for the following camp, as the foreign participants are absent at this weekend. Information given at this occasion are missing. The preparation weekend includes: getting used to the Camp site, the Camp rules, nature and surroundings (seminar in the "Naturpark Altmühltal Information centre"), the activities made available this season but also getting to know each other personally.

The Staffs' Jobs

The Staff is responsible for taking care of the guests, supplying the infrastructure (e.g. repairing and taking care of the site and tools) and making sure the Site rules are respected. They help and support the guests and supply the Camp activities as when needed or wanted.

Staffs' leisure time

Every member has one day off per week. The site should possibly be left. Foreign members of Staff have the possibility to get off more, when the Camp situation allows it. The Staff as a whole takes a half a day off per week to do something together.

Staffs' rules

As the Staff lives together like a "big family" during the Camp, rules have to be emplaced and accepted. The Staff members sleep in solid tents, where everyone has his own area and privacy with an own provisional bed, electric light and a little shelf. The jobs to do the next day are given by the Camp leader at the Staffmeeting. As the Staff members are expected to give example, they ought to accept the same rules as the guests do. Every member gains a small pocket money of 70€ for four weeks, whereas bed and food are for free. To be recognised, the Staff members wear turquoise T- or Sweatshirts with their name on.
